Empowering Gender Diverse Youth
Through Connections and Creations

About

GGP

The Gender Generations Project works to empower trans, two-spirit, non-binary, and other gender diverse youth so that they can recognize their potential to be leaders in their own communities through British Columbia, and the rest of the world.

The project fosters connections between the youth and adult mentors with shared or similar gender identities and backgrounds who can support and inspire them to live their truths in spite of adversity.

In our retreats, and through all of our workshops and other group activities, we work to build creative projects that provide meaningful ways for both the youth and mentors to engage in self-expression, as well as bring awareness to our diverse community.

We are a model of awesome gender diverse representation for youth in schools who might be questioning their gender identity or expression, parents of kids who are in the process of coming out, educators and other professionals who support gender diverse youth, and anyone else who can relate to our spirit of inclusivity and belonging.

In the past we have focused on the creation of projects in the realm of fine arts, such as writing, visual art, and performance, and are working on expanding our fields of interest into other areas.

History

The Gender Generations Project began as the Trans Tipping Point, a one-year writing project that grew into an ongoing intergenerational collective that centres all trans, non-binary, Two Spirit, and otherwise non-cisgender youth in the fullness of their identities.

The Trans Tipping Point ran for three years, exploring writing, visual art, and performance. The writing projects developed in our first year went on to be collected in the anthology Growing Up Trans, and our visual art was presented at the UVic Maltwood Gallery for an exhibit in 2019.

In 2020, we intended to stage a cabaret show featuring the youth’s plays, poetry, music, and other performance art during Victoria Pride, but that plan was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the course of 2020, we instead focused on setting up the project to persist well into the future, which included choosing a new name for the project to recognize the diversity and growth of the communities it serves.

We picked the name “Gender Generations Project,” to honour the intergenerational aspects of our programs, how the project provides a space for folks of all ages and gender identities (other than cisgender) to come together.

Located on unceded Lekwungen-speaking territories in Victoria, British Columbia, we offer free services, programming, volunteering, and paid work opportunities year-round.
