The Trans Tipping Point Anthology Project
The Trans Tipping Point team has already wrapped up its first project: an anthology written by and for transgender youth, accomplished over the course of three weekend retreats. While collaborating with other trans writers and mentors, participants workshopped pieces around family, body image, coming out, and other aspects of their lives. Together, these works represent a diverse cross section of a misrepresented community. By giving youth the opportunity to write their own narratives, our anthology represents trans experiences in a more authentic light. The anthology will be published in the upcoming year, offering a valuable resource to trans individuals and their families, health care providers, and teachers – or simply any of those looking to learn more about the experiences trans people face.
What is Camp TTP?
Based in Victoria, Camp Trans Tipping Point is a bi-annual weekend retreat with the aim of empowering trans youth to make connections and acquire skills within their own community. Through engaging workshops, games, open mic nights, and more, we give youth participants the opportunity to meet friends and role models who share their experiences, and to channel those experiences into unique works of art. The pieces the youth create this year will be displayed at an art exhibit at Legacy’s UVic Maltwood Gallery, which will be open to the public. This display will provide an insightful look into the lives of gender-diverse youth. Most importantly, we hope to foster a safe and accepting atmosphere where everyone can find their sense of belonging – hence why our “for youth, by youth” approach encourages participants to step into leadership roles as the project evolves.
