Pride Parade Contingent Application Policy

Introduction

Victoria Pride Society celebrates diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of gender, sexuality, and relationship diverse (GSRD) rights. As part of our commitment to fostering a safe and affirming environment during pride parades, we have established certain values and guidelines that all parade contingent applicants are expected to uphold. This document outlines the reasons why it is crucial for applicants to align with our values and provides information on potential reasons for an application to be declined.

Our Values

Inclusivity: We embrace individuals from all walks of life, irrespective of sexual orientation, gender identity, race, ethnicity, religion, age, ability, or socioeconomic background. Our parade contingent should reflect this commitment to inclusivity.

Respect and Tolerance: Mutual respect and tolerance are fundamental to our community. We expect all participants to treat others with respect, acknowledging and celebrating the diversity within our community.

Non-Discrimination: We do not condone discrimination or intolerance towards any individual or group based on their identity or background. Discriminatory behavior or language is not acceptable within our parade contingent.

Why Alignment with Our Values Matters

It is crucial for applicants to share and uphold  Victoria Pride Society’s values for the following reasons:

  • To Ensure a Safe and Welcoming Environment: Upholding our values fosters an inclusive and safe environment for all participants, spectators, and members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community attending the parade.
  • To Maintain the Integrity of Our Message: Our parade contingent represents our commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and GSRD rights. Alignment with our values ensures that our message remains consistent and impactful.
  • To Uphold the Spirit of Pride: Pride celebrations are rooted in activism, celebration, and unity. Individuals who support our values contribute to the positive and empowering spirit of pride.

Reasons for Potential Application Declination

While we encourage broad participation, there are instances where an application might be declined if:

  • The applicant’s values and messaging contradict Victoria Pride Society’s values,
  • The applicant’s history includes actions or behaviors that are discriminatory, intolerant, or harmful.
  • The applicant’s proposed contingent or messaging could potentially create an unsafe or unwelcoming environment for parade attendees or contradict the spirit of pride.
  • If we have reached the limit of parade entries having prioritized community-led and community-focused contingents first.

Victoria Pride Society values the participation of all individuals and groups who align with our mission and values. We strive to create an environment where everyone feels respected, included, and celebrated. By upholding our values, applicants contribute to the success of our pride parade.

Thank you for considering participation in  Victoria Pride Societys parade contingent. We look forward to celebrating diversity and inclusion with you.

Sincerely,

Victoria Pride Society Leadership Team
